The Bhutia Busty Gompa in Darjeeling is located about 1.5 kilometers from the Chowrasta. The red sects of the Lamas are the original owners of the monastery. The monastery is one of the branches of the Nyingmapa sect's Phodang Monastery in Sikkim.

The Bhutia Busty Gompa in Darjeeling is located near the Mount Kanchenjunga which is the third highest peak in the world. The monastery offers glorious views of the Kanchenjunga peak.

The Bhutia Busty Gompa of Darjeeling was previously situated on the Observatory Hill but later on the Nepalese gave the notice to move the monastery from there. The monastery was then known as the Place of the Thunderbolt. The meaning of the word Darjeeling is well associated with that of the monastery. In Tibet the meaning of Dorjee is thunderbolt and that of Ling is a place to rest. The King of Sikkim has had a great influence in preserving the monastery. The Bhutia Busty Gompa at Darjeeling was destroyed by earthquake in the year of 1934. The King of Sikkim took great pains to preserve this beautiful monastery and restore it to its former glory.

The Bhutia Busty Gompa of Darjeeling is decorated in a very grand and elegant way. Another very exquisite possession of the Bhutia Busty Gompa in Darjeeling is the library situated on the top floor. The library has a rich collection of books on Tibetan culture. There are a number of Buddhist books in the monastery which are rich source of information.
